Ludisia Discolor - The Jewel Orchid

Meet the extraordinary Ludisia Discolor, commonly known as the “Jewel Orchid” - a stunning terrestrial orchid grown not for its flowers but for its absolutely breathtaking foliage. This unique orchid breaks all the rules with its easy-care nature and spectacular velvety leaves that shimmer like precious gems, making it perfect for orchid lovers and foliage enthusiasts alike.

**Available Size:** 4” plants in landscape pots

Plant Characteristics:

Ludisia Discolor produces some of the most stunning foliage in the plant kingdom. The deep burgundy-black leaves feature intricate networks of golden, copper, and pink veining that seems to glow from within, creating an almost iridescent effect. The velvety texture of the leaves adds another dimension of luxury to this already spectacular plant. Unlike epiphytic orchids, this terrestrial species grows close to the ground with a creeping, spreading habit that makes it perfect for terrariums or as a groundcover in larger plantings. Mature plants may occasionally produce delicate spikes of small white flowers, but the real show is always the magnificent foliage.

Care Instructions:

- **Light:** Bright, indirect light; avoid direct sunlight which can fade the beautiful leaf coloration

- **Water:** Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged; prefers even moisture

- **Humidity:** High humidity essential (60-80%); excellent terrarium plant

- **Temperature:** Warm, stable temperatures 65-80°F; avoid temperature fluctuations

- **Soil:** Well-draining but moisture-retentive mix; orchid bark mixed with peat moss works well

- **Fertilizer:** Light, diluted orchid fertilizer every 2-3 weeks during growing season

- **Air Circulation:** Good airflow prevents fungal issues while maintaining high humidity

Special Notes:

This is one of the easiest orchids to grow, making it perfect for beginners to the orchid world. Unlike many orchids, it grows in regular potting conditions rather than mounted or in pure bark. The plant spreads by creeping rhizomes and can be easily propagated by division. It’s often called the “gateway orchid” because of its forgiving nature.

Perfect for orchid enthusiasts, terrarium lovers, and anyone seeking unique foliage plants with an exotic edge. Safe around pets and children, making it ideal for any household.
