Calathea ‘Rattlesnake’ - The Living Prayer Plant
Discover the mesmerizing beauty of Calathea ‘Rattlesnake’ (Calathea lancifolia), a captivating prayer plant that brings movement and exotic patterns to your indoor jungle. Named for its distinctive snake-like markings, this stunning foliage plant features elongated leaves with intricate patterns that seem to dance as the plant follows the sun throughout the day.
Available Size: 6” plants in landscape pots
Plant Characteristics:
Calathea ‘Rattlesnake’ showcases long, narrow leaves with a striking rattlesnake-like pattern of alternating light and dark green spots along the edges, complemented by wavy dark green markings down the center. The undersides reveal beautiful purple-burgundy coloration that adds another dimension of visual interest. This prayer plant exhibits the fascinating nyctinasty behavior - leaves fold upward at night like hands in prayer, then open again with the morning light. The plant typically grows 12-18 inches tall with an upright, architectural form that makes it an excellent specimen plant.
Care Instructions:
• Light: Bright, indirect light; avoid direct sunlight which can fade patterns and burn leaves
• Water: Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged; use filtered or distilled water when possible
• Humidity: High humidity essential (50-60%); use humidifier, pebble tray, or group with other plants
• Temperature: Warm, stable temperatures 65-80°F; very sensitive to cold drafts and temperature fluctuations
• Soil: Well-draining potting mix that retains moisture; peat-based mixes work well
• Fertilizer: Diluted liquid fertilizer every 2-4 weeks during growing season; avoid over-fertilizing
• Water Quality: Sensitive to chemicals in tap water; filtered, distilled, or rainwater preferred
Special Notes:
Calatheas are known for being somewhat particular about their care, but the reward is worth it! Brown leaf tips usually indicate low humidity or water quality issues. The daily leaf movement is completely normal and part of this plant’s charm. Regular misting around (not directly on) the plant helps maintain humidity.
Perfect for plant enthusiasts who appreciate interactive plants with stunning foliage patterns. Note: Calathea plants are non-toxic and safe around pets and children.
