Lipstick Plant Collection - Vibrant Blooming Beautie
Bring color and excitement to your plant collection with our stunning Lipstick Plants (Aeschynanthus species), known for their vibrant tubular flowers that emerge from dark “lipstick tube” calyxes. These eye-catching tropical plants combine beautiful trailing foliage with spectacular blooms, creating living art that brightens any space with their playful, colorful displays.
**Available Size:** 4” plants in landscape pots
Current Varieties:
- **Black Pagoda** - Dark bronze-green leaves with burgundy undersides and bright orange-red flowers
- **Classic** - Traditional bright green foliage with classic red-orange lipstick-shaped blooms
Plant Characteristics:
Lipstick Plants are epiphytic trailing plants that produce cascading stems perfect for hanging baskets or elevated displays. The Black Pagoda variety features distinctive dark bronze-green leaves with deep burgundy-red undersides, creating dramatic two-toned foliage even when not in bloom. The Classic variety showcases bright green, glossy leaves that provide the perfect backdrop for its vibrant flowers. Both varieties produce their signature tubular blooms that emerge from dark, tube-like calyxes, giving them their “lipstick” name. The flowers are typically bright red-orange and appear in clusters along the trailing stems, creating spectacular cascades of color when the plant is mature and happy.
Care Instructions:
- **Light:** Bright, indirect light; some morning sun encourages blooming
- **Water:** Keep soil evenly moist during growing season; reduce in winter
- **Humidity:** High humidity preferred (50-70%); use humidity tray or group with other plants
- **Temperature:** Warm temperatures 65-80°F; avoid cold drafts
- **Soil:** Well-draining, chunky mix (orchid bark, perlite, peat moss work well)
- **Fertilizer:** Regular feeding every 2-3 weeks during growing season with blooming plant fertilizer
- **Pruning:** Pinch growing tips to encourage bushier growth and more bloom sites
Special Notes:
Blooming is triggered by a combination of bright light, proper fertilization, and a slight winter rest period with reduced watering and cooler temperatures (60-65°F). Young plants may take 1-2 years to reach blooming maturity. The flowers are long-lasting and may attract hummingbirds if grown outdoors in warm climates.
Perfect for hanging basket displays, plant enthusiasts who love flowering houseplants, and anyone wanting to add tropical color to their collection. Safe around pets and children.
