Philodendron 'Brasil' & 'Velvet' - The Trailing Classics
Meet two popular members of the Philodendron family, Philodendron 'Brasil' and Philodendron 'Velvet.' These beautiful vining plants are celebrated for their classic heart-shaped leaves and easy-care nature. They are perfect for adding a touch of the tropics to any space, making them a fantastic choice for both new and experienced plant parents.
Plant Characteristics
Philodendron 'Brasil' is a vibrant and cheerful plant known for its striking variegated leaves. Each heart-shaped leaf is a beautiful mosaic of bright green and lime-green or yellow splashes. This plant is a fast grower, with vines that can trail gracefully from a hanging basket or a high shelf. Its unique coloration adds a pop of brightness to any room.
Philodendron 'Velvet' (also known as Philodendron Micans) is a stunning variety with a more subtle elegance. Its leaves are a deep, velvety green with a shimmering, almost bronze or reddish underside. The new leaves emerge in a beautiful coppery color, which deepens as they mature. This plant has a delicate feel and will trail beautifully, adding a touch of soft texture to your collection.
Care Instructions
- Light: Both varieties prefer bright, indirect light. Direct sun can scorch their leaves. They can tolerate lower light, but their growth may slow and the 'Brasil' variegation may become less pronounced.
- Water: Water thoroughly when the top two inches of soil feel dry. These plants are sensitive to overwatering, so it's best to let the soil dry out a bit between waterings.
- Humidity: They thrive in average to high humidity. Occasional misting or placing them near a humidifier can help them flourish.
- Temperature: Thrives in typical room temperatures, between 65-80°F. Protect them from cold drafts.
- Soil: A well-draining, airy potting mix is essential.
- Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).
Special Notes
Philodendrons are wonderful air-purifying plants and are very easy to propagate from stem cuttings. Their vining habit makes them perfect for hanging baskets or for climbing a moss pole. Please be aware that while beautiful, these plants are toxic if ingested by pets or children.
These are perfect for adding a touch of trailing green to shelves, desks, or any small space.
